JDE Peet's, the world's leading coffee group by scale, unexpectedly announced a major personnel change late last week.
According to Yahoo News on March 9, JDE Peet's headquarters disclosed the leadership transition plan on March 8 local time in the Netherlands.
Under the plan, 73-year-old Belgian executive Luc Vandevelde will become interim chief executive officer, effective April 1, 2024. In addition, after the annual general meeting on May 25 concludes, Vandevelde will further take over as Chairman of JDE Peet's. During this period, the company will simultaneously advance the search for a permanent CEO, with the evaluation scope covering both internal promotion and external recruitment.
JDE Peet's brands
Public information shows that JDE Peet's is a multinational coffee and tea company whose portfolio includes more than fifty brands such as Peet's Coffee, Moccona and L'OR. In its last fiscal year, the group achieved total revenue of 8.2 billion euros (about RMB 64.3 billion), with organic growth reaching 3.9%, of which sales in the Chinese market rose by more than 19%. Data from Narrow Door Restaurant Eye shows that Peet's Coffee currently operates 221 stores across 21 cities in 12 provinces in China.
This personnel change means two executives will leave their current positions: Chairman Olivier Goudet and CEO Fabien Simon. Simon has served as CEO since the company's IPO, and during his tenure repeatedly stated his intention to deepen the layout of coffee products and store expansion in the Chinese market. As Chairman, Goudet has always been a firm backer of Simon, and he once said publicly: "No one understands this business better than Simon."
In its press release, JDE Peet's headquarters noted that Vandevelde has served as lead independent director since the company's listing, and affirmed the extensive experience he has accumulated in corporate governance as well as in the retail and fast-moving consumer goods industries. Vandevelde's resume is quite impressive: he has served as Chairman of Carrefour, Chairman and CEO of the Marks & Spencer Group, and Senior Independent Director of Vodafone Group, among other key roles. The first 24 years of his career were spent at Kraft Foods, where he ultimately rose to CEO of Kraft Jacobs Suchard's France and Italy businesses.
Joachim Creus, CEO of European investment institution JAB Holdings, JDE Peet's largest shareholder, commented that Vandevelde is a highly experienced executive with a deep understanding of JDE Peet's and the coffee category, and expressed confidence that he can fully unlock shareholder value and lead the company through the selection of a permanent CEO.

Under the arrangement, Fabien Simon, who has served as CEO and Executive Director since September 2020, will leave the company on April 1. JDE Peet's has not yet explained the specific reason for his departure. However, the board still expressed its thanks to him, acknowledging that he led the company through complex situations during the pandemic and in a high-inflation environment, built the business into an industry giant with global coffee and tea brands, and always placed brand building, talent development and sustainable development at the core.
