How did a coffee cup label come to carry an offensive word?

A customer in Nanjing bought drinks at a Starbucks store and found a single vulgar Chinese character printed on one cup label. The store said the character came from a staff member's membership ID in the app and was printed automatically when a coupon was applied to the order.

The customer disputes that account, saying she was not told at the time that a coupon was being used and that loyalty points were involved, and she suspects the staff member kept the difference. Online observers disagree as well, with many arguing the label simply showed a customer nickname set in the app. No settlement has been reached.

Recently, a consumer bought a drink at a Starbucks in Nanjing and discovered that the cup label bore the single Chinese character "骚" (a vulgar term). The store explained that the character was a staff member's membership ID within the app, and that it had been automatically printed on the label because a coupon was used. The consumer disputed this, saying she had not been told at the time of ordering that a coupon was being used, that it also involved loyalty points, and she suspected the staff member of pocketing the difference. The incident sparked widespread discussion online, with both sides telling different stories about whether the name on the label came from a customer's custom nickname or a staff member's ID, and no settlement has been reached so far.

Recently, a netizen exposed on social media that when she made a purchase at Starbucks, the cup she received actually had the character "骚" printed on it?

It is understood that on the afternoon of November 2, the netizen went to a Starbucks store in Nanjing to buy a drink. The staff member told her that if she ordered two drinks at once, she would get a free small cake. The netizen thought the offer was a good deal and accepted it, ultimately paying 58 yuan for two coffee drinks and a small cake.

However, after walking out of the store, she noticed that on the label of one of the drinks, in addition to the product-related information, there was also the character "骚" occupying a line by itself.

Regarding this character, some netizens speculated that a store employee might have typed it by mistake, accidentally typing "烧" instead of "少" in "少冰" (less ice). But this explanation was quickly dismissed by other netizens: "Is it possible that this kind of order is generated automatically?"

Most netizens believed that the name on the cup sticker was most likely a name the customer had set herself. "Isn't this her own WeChat name? She registered as a member by scanning the WeChat QR code." "This spot is the membership card nickname; I suggest opening the mobile app and checking your own nickname." "This sticker seems to be a nickname customized by online order users and printed automatically by the system."

The store explained to the netizen at the time that they had used a "spend 80, get 30 off" coupon for her, that the coupon had been used under a certain staff member's account, and that "骚" was precisely that staff member's ID within the app, which the system had automatically generated onto the label. On the spot, the store took back that drink and poured it out, and remade her drink as an upgraded extra-large cup.

But the netizen involved spotted the flaw in this, saying: "When I placed my order, I was not told that any coupon was being used. And this also involves a points issue—you secretly used the customer's points without telling her." The netizen also questioned whether the Starbucks employee was pocketing the difference: "He used the employee's internal 80-minus-30 coupon, and then sold it to me at the original price."

According to Jimu News, the store manager said the matter was a misunderstanding. The staff member did indeed use a "spend 80, get 30 off" coupon for her; two drinks and a small cake originally priced at 88 yuan cost only 58 yuan after the discount. This coupon had been downloaded by a staff member earlier from the company's regular-customer group and was set to expire in one day, so the staff member who served this customer that day recommended that she use it. "That indecent character was the ID name of the staff member who downloaded the coupon, and it was automatically generated on the drink label printed by the POS. You can't type on the POS; it's impossible that we would deliberately print such a character on the label."

Afterward, the store offered a refund, but the person involved refused it. She said she did not need a refund and only asked the store to formally explain the course of events to her and apologize, in writing or by video. If there really was a staff member with the ID name "骚," she hoped she could also meet this person to confirm that it was true. At present, the store has not agreed to these requests from the netizen. The store manager mentioned above said: "We had no malice from beginning to end, and we have been actively handling the matter since it happened." As of now, the two sides have still not reached a settlement.

Those familiar with Starbucks' ordering system may know that the name on Starbucks label paper is generally the user's name. As for whether the indecent name in this incident belonged to the consumer or the staff member, and whether it was intentional or unintentional, further investigation is still needed.
