How does the new SCA coffee skills certificate work?

The Specialty Coffee Association will replace its current coffee certificate with a new skills certificate. Applications for the old black certificate, which requires more than 100 points in SCA courses, close on December 31, 2023, and the new system starts fully in 2024, ending the credit-based route.

The new structure has four certification directions, and each one requires three foundational courses first: coffee skills, sustainability, and technology. Black certificates applied for this year are issued from 2024 and remain valid, so practitioners planning to certify face a final window for the old path.

The Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) recently announced that it will launch a brand-new SCA skills certificate system, gradually replacing the current SCA coffee certificate. The application deadline for the current black certificate (100-point certificate) is December 31, 2023, and the new certification will be fully launched starting in 2024. The new system is divided into four major certification directions, each of which requires first completing three foundational courses—coffee skills, sustainability, and technology—before entering the corresponding advanced study, completely bidding farewell to the credit system. For practitioners who are preparing for or planning to obtain the old-version black certificate, this year is the final window.

The SCA Specialty Coffee Association recently released news that it will implement a new set of SCA skills certificates to replace the previous SCA coffee certificates.

The full name of SCA is Specialty Coffee Association. It is currently one of the most professional, authoritative, and innovation-focused international specialty coffee organizations, and has long been dedicated to coffee training and education. Within the coffee industry, SCA plays the role of a training and certification body, providing coffee practitioners with a complete system of learning and qualification certification.

According to the official website, the current SCA Coffee Black Certificate (that is, the 100-point certificate) will be canceled and replaced by the SCA Skills Certificate. During the transition period for the new certificate, the old-version SCA coffee certificate will remain valid for a fairly long period of time. People who meet the application requirements for the SCA coffee certificate can still submit applications, with a deadline of December 31, 2023, after which it will be fully replaced by the new SAC skills certificate. The SCA Coffee Black Certificate obtained after submitting an application this year will be issued starting in 2024; the certificate is still recognized and honored by the association and is valid proof of the learner's achievement.

The certification requirement for the old-version SCA Coffee Black Certificate is that applicants need to accumulate more than 100 points in SCA coffee courses. SCA certification consists of six major modules: coffee knowledge, barista, brewing, green coffee, roasting, and sensory evaluation. Among them, the coffee knowledge module has only one level and counts for 10 points; the other five modules are divided into beginner 5 points, intermediate 10 points, and advanced 25 points. By obtaining the corresponding course certificate, the corresponding points are earned.

The new certification certificates will be divided into four directions: cafe certificate, roasting certificate, coffee trade certificate, and sustainable coffee certificate.

Each type of certificate requires first completing three foundational courses: coffee skills, coffee sustainability, and coffee technology, and then entering the corresponding advanced courses for each. The new certificates adopt a required-course combination approach and no longer use the credit system, so the certification content will be more comprehensive and the course structure will also be more complex.

In summary, the old-version SCA Coffee Black Certificate uses a credit system, and candidates can choose the modules and assessment content they want to study according to their own needs, and the assessments are divided into levels. To obtain the final black certificate, one only needs to accumulate enough credits across different modules.

The new certification, however, requires more comprehensive study. No matter which direction of certificate one wants to obtain, one must first complete the foundational study of all subjects, and then carry out advanced study and certification for specific modules.

If any of you intend to obtain the old-version black certificate, it is recommended to complete it within this year, as the new certificate certification system will be launched starting next year.
