Coffee Knowledge: What Did Starbucks Q2 Fiscal 2023 Earnings Reveal in China?

Starbucks reported second-quarter fiscal 2023 results with global revenue of $8.716 billion, up 14 percent year over year, and net profit of $908 million, up 34.66 percent. Global same-store sales rose 5 percent. In China, net revenue grew 3 percent to nearly $800 million, same-store sales rose 3 percent, and transactions were up 4 percent, the first positive same-store sales since the third quarter of fiscal 2021.

China added a net 153 stores in the quarter, more than double the prior period, covering 32 provinces and 268 cities with over 7,017 stores. The rebound matters because it comes as rival Luckin Coffee keeps expanding. Whether Starbucks can carry the momentum toward its 2025 China strategic vision is the question the results now frame.

Starbucks recently released its second-quarter results for fiscal year 2023, with global consolidated revenue and net profit both achieving year-over-year growth, while same-store sales in the Chinese market turned positive for the first time since the third quarter of fiscal year 2021. Against the backdrop of accelerated store expansion, optimistic remarks from its founder, and the rapid growth of competitor Luckin Coffee, whether Starbucks can ride the momentum to steadily advance its 2025 China market strategic vision is worth watching.

Starbucks has taken another solid step toward its China 2025 strategic vision.

On May 3, this coffee chain giant disclosed its operating data for the second quarter of fiscal year 2023 (covering January 2 to April 2, 2023). According to the financial report, the consumer market in which Starbucks operates is showing an accelerating recovery. Total revenue for the quarter reached $8.716 billion, up 14% year over year; net profit was $908 million, an increase of 34.66% compared with the same period last year; and global same-store sales recorded a 5% increase.

Focusing on the Chinese market, Starbucks achieved 3% net revenue growth, with revenue approaching $800 million by the end of the quarter; same-store sales rose 3%, and same-store transaction volume also increased 4%. This was the first positive same-store sales growth for Starbucks China since the third quarter of fiscal year 2021, performing noticeably better than market expectations.

In terms of store expansion, Starbucks China added a net 153 stores during the reporting period, more than double the number in the previous quarter, showing explosive expansion momentum. Data from Zhaomen Canyan shows that Starbucks China currently covers 32 provinces and 268 cities, with more than 7,017 stores in total.

It is not hard to see that the simultaneous rise in revenue and net profit is inseparable from Starbucks' continued store openings. As the impact of the pandemic gradually fades, companies around the world are returning to normal operations and achieving corresponding growth. In contrast, current market foot traffic has seen a "strong rebound."

According to multiple media reports, Wang Jingying, chairman and CEO of Starbucks China, pointed out that the Chinese market has turned a new page, and the second quarter marked the beginning of Starbucks China's steady and comprehensive recovery. She revealed that in March, Starbucks China's same-store sales grew 30%, and this upward trend will continue in the third quarter. In the second half of this year and even further into the future, Starbucks China will continue to drive revenue and profit growth and accelerate the pace of opening new stores.

It is worth noting that Starbucks previously announced its China strategic vision at an investor meeting, namely that by 2025, the total number of Starbucks China stores will reach 9,000. From this perspective, Starbucks' operations in the Chinese market are indeed steadily advancing toward the goal of 9,000 stores in China by 2025.

On April 23, more than a week before the earnings release, Starbucks founder Howard Schultz appeared at Peking University's Guanghua School of Management for a sharing session and also emphasized that the scale and potential opportunities of the Chinese market remain enormous. He said: "I believe that one day the business scale of Starbucks in the Chinese market will surpass that of the U.S. market, and the number of stores in China will exceed 10,000."

Looking next at the latest financial report released earlier this month by "old rival" Luckin Coffee, both sides are showing positive momentum, but when comparing performance growth rates, Starbucks' increase is far below that of Luckin Coffee. Luckin Coffee's first-quarter financial report showed that its single-quarter revenue was 4.44 billion yuan, a sharp year-over-year increase of 84.5%; net profit was about 680 million yuan; and it added a net 1,137 stores, bringing the total number of stores to 9,351.
