How does blue mountain coffee differ in natural and washed lots?
Natural and washed Blue Mountain coffee from Jamaica's Clifton Farm differ mainly in processing, and that shapes the cup. Both are Blue Mountain No. 1, Typica variety, grown at about 1,310 meters and given a medium roast. The washed lot keeps the classic balanced profile, while the natural lot shifts aroma, acidity, sweetness, body, and aftertaste in distinct ways.
Front Street Blue Mountain used washed processing until 2019, when natural trials began, and a small natural batch was exported in 2020. For coffee brewing, the comparison used a 30-gram bloom for 30 seconds, then a slow circular pour to 130 grams before switching to a larger stream. Clifton Farm holds Rainforest Alliance certification.

Brewing Parameters
Brewing method: First bloom with 30 grams of water for 30 seconds, then slowly pour 100 grams of water in a thin stream in circles from the center outward; at this point the digital scale reads 130 grams. When the coffee bed drops to the halfway point, switch to a larger stream and pour 65 grams of water, bringing the total water amount to 195 grams. After all the coffee liquid in the dripper has flowed into the server, remove the dripper and end extraction. The entire brewing process takes 1 minute and 50 seconds.
Flavor Comparison [Front Street Natural Blue Mountain] On the first sip, a brown-sugar-like sweetness can be felt, accompanied by the tart aroma of berries; in the middle and finish, nutty and cocoa flavors emerge; the mouthfeel is creamy and smooth, with rich yet clear layers, and the aftertaste carries the aroma of walnuts.
[Front Street Washed Blue Mountain] On the palate, it presents dark chocolate and nutty flavors, with very high cleanliness, outstanding brightness, and a satisfying body; acidity, sweetness, and bitterness reach balance.
Comparing these two Blue Mountain No. 1 coffees side by side, Front Street Natural Blue Mountain has more prominent flavor layers, and both its sweetness and acidity are pleasant; while Front Street Washed Blue Mountain retains the classic signature taste of Blue Mountain—that smooth, bright, and full-bodied experience from the first sip to the last. The subtle balance among acidity, sweetness, and bitterness is truly admirable.
