How Should Costa Rica Bach Coffee Be Brewed?

Costa Rica Musician Series Bach comes from the Canet Estate in the Tarrazu region at 1,950 meters, uses black honey processing that keeps the pectin layer, and is built on the Caturra variety, a single-gene mutation of Bourbon found in Brazil in 1937. The cup shows high sweetness, a full body, and an oily texture.

Three drippers were compared: V60, cake filter cup, and Ice Eye filter cup, all kept at the same parameters. The recipe uses 91C water, grind size BG 5R with a 58 percent passing rate on a No. 20 sieve, a 1:15 coffee-to-water ratio, and a three-stage pour starting with a 30-gram bloom. Acidity shifts from berries to citrus as the cup cools.

This article focuses on the Costa Rica Musician Series Bach launched by Front Street Coffee, first introducing its production region, estate, processing method, and Caturra variety background, then explaining the flavor positioning and brewing approach of this bean. The article uses a V60, cake filter cup, and Ice Eye filter cup for comparison, providing water temperature, grind size, coffee-to-water ratio, and a three-stage pouring technique, and records the flavor changes at high temperature, medium temperature, and after complete cooling. It is suitable as a reference for coffee enthusiasts who want to understand the characteristics of the Musician Series Bach and who wish to replicate its high sweetness, full body, and clean performance.

Caturra is a single-gene mutation branch of the Bourbon variety and was discovered in Brazil in 1937. Its yield and disease resistance are both superior to Bourbon, and its tree shape is shorter, making picking more convenient. In terms of flavor, it often has lemon or citrus-like acidity, while its sweetness tends toward fruity notes.

Front Street Bach in the Costa Rica Canet Estate Musician Series is made from Yellow Catuai from Costa Rica's high-quality Tarrazú production region, using black honey processing that fully retains the pectin layer. The estate owner included it in the Musician Series and named it Bach. This bean has high sweetness, a thick and full overall mouthfeel, an obvious oily texture, and also fairly good cleanliness. The acidity gradually changes from berries to citrus, with rich layers.

Because [Front Street Costa Rica Bach] is a bean with outstanding flavor expression, the filter cups chosen this time are also more oriented toward highlighting flavor: the V60 filter cup, cake filter cup, and Ice Eye filter cup. The three are kept consistent in parameters and technique, using a small stream of water for fast pouring to increase agitation, thereby bringing out aroma; staged pouring helps improve the extraction rate.

Parameters: water temperature 91°C, grind size BG 5R (58% passing rate on China standard No. 20 sieve), coffee-to-water ratio 1:15

Technique: First bloom with 30 grams of water for 30 seconds, then pour to 120 grams for the staged pour. When the water level drops and is about to expose the coffee bed, continue pouring to 228 grams and stop. When the water level drops and is about to expose the coffee bed, remove the filter cup. Timing starts from the beginning of the bloom, and the total extraction time is 1 minute 56 seconds.

Flavor: At higher temperatures, the entry is relatively balanced, with an obvious fermented wine aroma, sweetness like rice wine and raisins, and some tea-like notes in the finish; after the temperature drops slightly, the entry has berry-like acidity and a genmaicha aftertaste, with an obvious juicy feel; after complete cooling, it shows orange-like sweet acidity, with a light sugarcane sweetness in the aftertaste.

Brief note: Front Street is a brand focused on coffee research and is happy to share coffee-related knowledge with everyone. We share without reservation, simply hoping that more friends will fall in love with coffee; at the same time, there are 3 low-discount coffee events every month, with the aim of letting more people drink good coffee at a lower price. This is also the purpose Front Street has adhered to for 6 years.
