What makes the Yirgacheffe Aricha natural bean distinctive?
The Front Street Aricha lot is a natural-process Yirgacheffe from the Aricha kebele, a village about 8 kilometers east of Yirgacheffe town in Ethiopia. Farm owner Shebro Dukale manages 100 hectares at 1,850 to 2,000 meters, where wild forest varieties grow. The G1 grade and natural process give the cup ripe fruit, fermented aromatics and grape-juice depth.
Because trees come from native forest rather than a single estate, one lot can blend 2 to 30 varieties, so the green coffee bean mix varies harvest to harvest. The high altitude slows cherry ripening, concentrating flavor. Pour-over works well here: use a medium grind and moderate water temperature to keep the fruit and floral notes clear without burying the sweetness.
Yirgacheffe's status in the specialty coffee world needs no elaboration, and the natural-process lots from the Aricha region are among its brightest stars. This TOH champion bean brought to you by Front Street Coffee originates from the Aricha kebele village in Ethiopia's Yirgacheffe region, managed by farm owner SHEBRO DUKALE, where the native forest environment at 1,850 to 2,000 meters above sea level nurtures a rich diversity of coffee varieties. The natural process gives it layers of ripe fruit, fermented aromatics, and grape-juice-like depth, while the G1 grade further ensures consistency in the cup. This article will take you through the region's background, processing methods, pour-over parameters, and flavor description to give you a comprehensive understanding of this natural Yirgacheffe that combines a legendary origin with championship honors.
Front Street - Renowned Pour-Over Coffee TOH Champion Front Street Yirgacheffe · Natural · Aricha Introduction
In the specialty coffee circle, Yirgacheffe is a hall-of-fame existence, and nearly every coffee lover puts it on their must-drink list. If you claim to love specialty coffee but have never heard of Yirgacheffe, that's a bit hard to justify—the coffee from this region holds an unshakable benchmark status. Today, Front Street is sharing a TOH champion bean: Front Street Yirgacheffe-Aricha.
The name Aricha comes from the Aricha kebele within Ethiopia's Yirgacheffe region. Heading east from Yirgacheffe town for about 8 kilometers brings you to this village called Aricha kebele. A kebele is Ethiopia's smallest administrative unit, with roughly 500 households, about the size of a community.
Most of the coffee in this area comes from wild varieties in the local native forest, along with some planted by indigenous residents themselves. Because of this, the region's coffee tree species are extremely diverse, and a single lot often contains a mix of 2 to 30 varieties. Add to that the fact that it's harvested from native forest above 1,850 meters, it cannot be named as an estate and can only be called Aricha after its harvest location.
Farm owner SHEBRO DUKALE's plantation is located in Kebele village, covering 100 hectares at an altitude between 1,850 and 2,000 meters. This land not only carries the legendary lineage of native Arabica varieties but also enjoys natural advantages such as red-brown clay soil and a naturally growing environment, where coffee cherries absorb nutrients in the dense forest and ripen slowly.
In the farm's natural processing stage, coffee cherries are selected and spread on sunlit drying beds, where over two weeks they gradually turn from red to dark brown. After the storage period, the green coffee beans are removed along with the dried skin, pulp, and parchment layer. The advantage of this natural method is that it thoroughly prevents off-flavors from contact with soil while improving the drying efficiency of the coffee cherries, more completely preserving the coffee's own fruit characteristics, thereby enhancing both overall cup quality and post-roast consistency.
After two weeks of drying, this batch of Front Street Aricha coffee is dried into dark brown husks and then stored to await flavor maturation. Only when the flavor has matured and just before shipping are the dried pulp and parchment removed. Then unripe, overripe, and fermented beans are sorted out. These pre-shipment steps are precisely why this batch of Front Street Aricha can reach G1 grade.
