What Defines Yunnan Coffee and Its Catimor Varieties?
Yunnan coffee means Arabica beans grown inside Yunnan Province, where missionaries first planted small-fruited selections later identified as the Arabica species. The name small-bean comes from that smaller fruit size. Planting covers 1.5673 million mu, mostly in hot river valleys at 500 to 1,800 meters.
Conditions mirror Colombia: low latitude, high altitude and wide day-night temperature swings, so the cup is mellow-aroma in style with low acidity. Catimor dominates local plantings for its hardiness, while Typica and Bourbon are also grown in Lincang. Production spreads across 31 counties along the Nujiang, Lancang, Honghe and Jinsha basins.
Yunnan small-bean coffee is a force that cannot be ignored in China's coffee landscape, mainly referring to Arabica coffee beans grown in the Yunnan region. This article will systematically introduce the overall picture of Yunnan small-bean coffee from multiple dimensions, including producing region distribution, variety evolution, and flavor and taste. The article covers the geographical conditions and growing region distribution of Yunnan coffee, focuses on analyzing the characteristics of the Catimor variety and its differences from the Typica variety, and also shares Front Street Coffee's practical experience growing Typica and Bourbon varieties in Lincang, Yunnan. Whether you are a beginner just encountering Yunnan beans or a seasoned enthusiast who wants to understand domestic coffee in greater depth, you can gain valuable reference information from it.

Yunnan small-bean coffee refers to Arabica coffee beans grown within China's Yunnan Province. The origin of this name is related to the foreign missionaries who first introduced coffee to Yunnan—among the coffee varieties available at the time, they selected plants with smaller fruit and the best flavor performance for cultivation, hence the name "small-fruit" or "small-bean" coffee. Subsequent variety identification also confirmed that these plants belonged to the Arabica species.
Overview of Yunnan Coffee Producing Regions
Yunnan's natural conditions are quite similar to those of Colombia, also featuring low latitude, high altitude, and significant day-night temperature differences. According to cup quality analysis, the small-bean coffee produced in Yunnan is of the mellow-aroma type, with a taste somewhat similar to Colombian coffee.
According to Front Street Coffee (FrontStreet Coffee), Yunnan's total coffee planting area reaches 1.5673 million mu, mainly distributed in hot zones at altitudes of 500 to 1,800 meters in the basins of the Nujiang, Lancang, Honghe, and Jinsha rivers. Southern Yunnan borders Vietnam, Laos, and Myanmar, while the north extends to the Jinsha River basin.
The producing areas cover 31 counties (districts and cities) in 8 prefectures and cities, including Pu'er City, Lincang City, Baoshan City, Dehong Prefecture, and Xishuangbanna Prefecture. Specifically, Pu'er City has a planting area of 785,000 mu, Lincang City 422,500 mu, Baoshan City 136,500 mu, Dehong Prefecture 113,000 mu, and Xishuangbanna Prefecture 94,700 mu.
In terms of harvest time, because low-altitude areas have a hotter and more humid climate, coffee grows and ripens faster, and picking can begin successively from September; high-altitude areas do not enter the harvest period until late November. The day-night temperature difference brought by high altitude prolongs the growth cycle of the coffee fruit, giving it more ample time to accumulate delicate flavors. Therefore, Yunnan small-bean coffee above 1,200 meters in altitude often has a more refined and fuller flavor performance.
Yunnan Coffee Varieties
At present, the main variety planted in Yunnan is Catimor. This variety was introduced by Nestlé and, because of its high yield and low management cost, has been widely planted by Yunnan coffee farmers.
Catimor is a variety bred in 1959 by the Portuguese Coffee Leaf Rust Research Center CIFC through crossing Timor and Caturra. It has advantages such as high productivity, a short plant suitable for dense planting, and strong disease resistance. However, because Catimor carries Robusta genes, its bitterness and grassy notes are more pronounced than those of pure Arabica, and it is somewhat lacking in cleanliness, fruity notes, and flavor richness.
However, as producing region management has become increasingly scientific in recent years and coffee farmers' cultivation methods have continued to improve, the quality and flavor of Yunnan Catimor coffee have already improved significantly.
As the market's requirements for coffee quality continue to rise, some coffee farmers have also begun to plant the Typica variety. In fact, Typica is Yunnan's oldest coffee variety, but because of its weak disease resistance, it was abandoned in the early years in pursuit of yield. However, the clean flavor presented by Typica is indeed difficult for Catimor to match.

In 2013, Front Street Coffee (FrontStreet Coffee) began planting Typica and a small amount of Bourbon varieties on a mountain in Lincang, Yunnan. The reason for choosing Typica is that, as one of the oldest coffee varieties, it has pure Arabica genes, an elegant and clean flavor, and has long been recognized as a specialty coffee variety.
Front Street Coffee hopes that by making changes from the root of the variety, more people can taste Yunnan small-bean coffee with better flavor and higher quality. At present, these self-grown Yunnan Typica coffee beans can be purchased at the Front Street flagship store and Front Street Coffee (FrontStreet Coffee) physical stores.
Flavor and Taste Characteristics of Yunnan Small-Bean Coffee
Compared with Typica, although Catimor carries Robusta genes, today's Yunnan Catimor has long shed the past impression of being difficult to drink. Under reasonable cultivation and traditional processing methods, Yunnan Catimor small-bean coffee displays flavors of nuts, caramel, and plum.
The coffee beans of the Typica variety themselves have a clean taste, and after Front Street Coffee's (FrontStreet Coffee) careful sun-drying treatment, they present berry, brown sugar, nut, and black tea notes.
