High altitude, a misty micro-climate, and traditional washing give the cup elegant floral aromas and clean, transparent acidity that keeps it approachable for people new to Ethiopian coffee.
Yirgacheffe sits in the Gedeo region at altitudes of 1,700 to 2,100 meters, among the highest coffee-growing areas in the world. Coffee bean trees there are mostly cultivated in a garden model, planted near farmers' homes and harvested by hand, which supports careful selection and tight control during processing.

Today Front Street wants to introduce a bean that is quite friendly to beginners—Yirgacheffe Washed Worka. This coffee comes from the small town of Werka in the southern producing region of Ethiopia, known for its elegant and fresh floral aroma and clean, transparent acidity. More than 700 smallholder farmers participate in cultivation locally, and the processing methods follow traditional washing and natural. Worka's flavor performance is outstanding, and its producing region has a distinct personality, which is also why it ranks among the representatives of Ethiopian specialty coffee. In Front Street's view, the reason Worka has such a rich flavor spectrum is closely related to the close collaboration among farmers, careful selection during harvest, and strict control in the processing stages. Yirgacheffe has always been an indispensable piece of the specialty coffee landscape, worthy of being called a treasure of the industry; if one day it lost such charm, Front Street believes the pace of progress in specialty coffee would also slow down accordingly.
Yirgacheffe is located in the Gedeo region of southern Ethiopia. Within this area, Yirgacheffe and Kochere are relatively well-known, with altitudes ranging from 1700 to 2100 meters, making it one of the highest coffee-producing regions in the world and an iconic name in Ethiopian specialty coffee. The rift valley area represented by the Misty Valley is shrouded in fog all year round, with a mild spring-like climate, gentle breezes, and a cool and humid environment. Thousands of coffee trees flourish here, creating Yirgacheffe's unique terroir charm of interwoven floral and fruity aromas that are hard to pin down.
Yirgacheffe coffee cultivation mostly adopts the garden model, that is, farmers plant coffee trees near their homes themselves, harvest them themselves during the harvest season, and then send them to processing plants near water sources for unified processing (or centralized purchasing by intermediaries). Apart from a few capable estates that can independently complete cultivation, harvesting, and green bean processing, coffee beans from many different areas and different varieties are often mixed and processed by processing plants, then sent to auction houses for official grading and classification. This is also why we commonly see Ethiopian coffee beans named and distinguished by processing plant or cooperative.
Why is it called Worka
Worka Cooperative belongs to the YCFCU cooperative union. It was established in 2005 and is located in a remote area of the Yirgacheffe producing region, about 75 kilometers from the local coffee trading center Dilla. The external road conditions are poor, and from the cooperative to the paved main road there is a 20-kilometer dirt road. The cooperative is composed of 305 farmers, with a planting area of about 763 hectares and an annual output of nearly 460 tons, making it a relatively small-scale farmer cooperative. Because no chemical fertilizers or pesticides are used in the cultivation process, Worka smallholders have also obtained EU-recognized Skal organic coffee certification.
More than half of Ethiopia's coffee cultivation is in the form of Garden Coffee, that is, courtyard coffee—smallholders plant coffee in small areas in their own backyards, averaging 0.5 to 1.5 hectares per household, with coffee as the main cash crop, while also planting bananas and other miscellaneous crops for shade and food. Each farming household is not only self-sufficient in food, but also relies on selling coffee beans to exchange for other daily necessities. This production method, combined with the locally unique native tree species coffee gardens, makes the flavor of each batch of beans different and full of character. This batch of Yirgacheffe-Worka purchased by FrontStreet Coffee uses the traditional washed processing method and has the typical washed Yirgacheffe profile, with distinct floral aromas, and both dry and wet aromas exuding rich citrus notes.
Washed processing method
Screening coffee cherries—removing pulp—fermentation—washing—drying—hulling
The screened coffee cherries are sent into the pulper, first removing the skin and pulp; the green beans with residual pulp and mucilage are placed in water and fermented for about 24 hours; after fermentation is complete, the green beans with parchment are moved into a flowing water channel for washing to remove pulp and mucilage; after washing, they are sun-dried or dried with a dryer to reduce the moisture content to about 12%. Finally, the parchment of the green beans is removed.
