How Do You Brew Black Coffee by Pour-Over?

Pour-over brewing can start with drip bag coffee, which holds pre-ground coffee sealed in a filter bag. Tear the packet open, set the bag in a cup, pour hot water over the grounds and a cup of aromatic black coffee is ready in moments. Grinding is done in advance, but the regional flavor of the beans still comes through in the cup.

Drip bags suit anyone new to specialty coffee who wants to compare origins without buying full bags. A five-origin gift box lets a drinker sample Indonesia Mandheling with its herbal and spice notes, Panama with berry and oolong tea qualities, Ethiopia Yirgacheffe with citrus and floral notes, Honduras with nutty chocolate sweetness, and Kenya with a dark plum character. Four pour steps follow from there.

Front Street teaches you four steps to brew a cup of drip bag coffee

1. Tear open the sealing strip at the top of the filter bag

2. Pull open the hanging ears on both sides and rest them on the rim of the cup

3. Using hot water at 88–93°C, pour in a slow, thin stream until about half the bag's volume is filled. Let it steep for 10 to 20 seconds, then begin the second pour until the filter bag is nine-tenths full. Once the hot water has fully drained, do a final pour to nine-tenths full and wait for the coffee liquid to completely drip through. (If you prefer a milder taste, you can add one more pour to reduce the coffee's concentration.)

4. Remove the filter bag and discard it. After brewing, simply pinch the paper tabs on both sides of the drip bag coffee toward the middle to easily lift it out—your fingers won't get wet at all, making it very convenient to handle.

To preserve as much of the coffee's original flavor as possible, all Front Street drip bag coffee is made from fresh coffee beans ground within 5 days of roasting. Front Street recommends drinking it as soon as possible after receiving the product, because storing it too long can easily cause the coffee's aroma to dissipate. If you want to experience coffee at its fullest flavor, Front Street recommends buying whole beans and grinding fresh right before brewing—the flavor layers will be even more outstanding.
