What Makes This Coffee Farm in Yirgacheffe Aricha Distinct?
Yirgacheffe Aricha is a naturally processed Ethiopian coffee from the Gedeo zone, grown at 1,900 to 2,100 meters by smallholders around the Kebel Aricha area. The Front Street Ethiopia Yirgacheffe Aricha G1 carries the top G1 grade and shows light fermented wine aroma, sweet orange, spice and honey sweetness. Most Yirgacheffe lots are washed, but a small share of top-grade cherry is dried as natural to build fruit and body.
Cultivation in Yirgacheffe is a garden model: coffee trees stand in household backyards or are intercropped with other crops, so each coffee farm yields limited volume, and communities such as Idido, Harfusa, Hama and Beloya supply most award-winning lots. The green bean sourcing behind the Front Street lot follows Project Origin, a program started by 2015 World Barista Champion Sasa Sestic, which buys directly from producers and pays for quality rather than volume.
Yirgacheffe is one of Ethiopia's most recognizable coffee regions, and the naturally processed Aricha is especially famous for its intense fruity and winey notes. This article begins with the cultivation history of Yirgacheffe and its cooperative model, sorts out the grading systems of the two major categories, washed and natural, and focuses on the product information of Front Street Ethiopia Yirgacheffe Aricha G1, the background of the Project Origin green bean program, as well as the flavor performance of this bean and pour-over extraction parameters. Whether you want to learn about the region or are looking for a natural bean with bright acidity and rich berry notes, this content provides a complete reference.

Coffee cultivation in Yirgacheffe can be traced back to its introduction by European monastery monks, and later gradually shifted to management by local farmers or cooperatives. This region is not a single estate, but is composed of multiple surrounding coffee communities and cooperatives, covering Idido, Harfusa, Hama, and Beloya near Misty Valley. These areas are mainly washed processed, but a small amount of top-grade beans are deliberately natural processed to enhance fruity notes and body. The mountain villages are shrouded in mist year-round, with a mild climate like spring, pleasant breezes in summer, cool rather than hot, abundant rain but not damp, and no cold damage in winter, thus creating a regional flavor interwoven with citrus and floral notes. Coffee trees are mostly planted in farmers' backyards or intercropped with other crops, and each household has limited output, making it a typical garden coffee model. Almost all award-winning Yirgacheffe beans come from the villages and communities mentioned above.

About Project Origin
Sasa Sestic is the 2015 World Barista Champion. Three years ago, together with the commercial team ONA Coffee, he launched a green bean sourcing program called Project Origin. The project works directly with coffee growers in poor countries and regions, improves their production conditions, and purchases coffee beans at a buying price 20% higher than fair trade prices. The original intention of the project also includes deepening communication between roasters and coffee farmers and guiding farmers to grow high-quality coffee. To date, Sasa has established cooperative relationships with growers from eight countries, including Brazil, Panama, India, Ethiopia, El Salvador, and Costa Rica.

This batch of Front Street Yirgacheffe comes from the Kebel Aricha processing station, with about 650 to 700 small coffee farmers nearby. Farmers deliver ripe cherries here for processing in exchange for cash. The processing station first screens usable cherries, then places them directly on raised beds to sun-dry, turning them once every 2 to 3 hours in the first few days to prevent over-fermentation. After four to six weeks of sun-drying, workers remove the outer pulp with a machine according to weather and temperature conditions, then transport it to Addis for storage. Natural beans are usually stored in parchment form until hulled just before export to ensure green bean quality. This batch of Front Street Natural Aricha is rated G1, the highest grade, by the ECX. From green bean appearance, consistency, and freshness to dry aroma and flavor, it is quite outstanding. If you like bright acidity and rich berry flavors, it is definitely worth trying.
Yirgacheffe is divided into two major categories according to green bean processing methods:
Category A is the washed processing method. The grading standard is set by the Specialty Coffee Association of America, SCAA, and is divided into Gr-1 and Gr-2. The smaller the Arabic numeral, the higher the grade. Front Street G1 Yirgacheffe has a distinctive style, and the flavor of citrus and floral notes fused into the coffee liquid is a deliciousness no one can resist;
Category B is natural processed coffee green beans, with grades divided into Gr-1, Gr-3, Gr-4, and Gr-5. Likewise, the highest grade, Front Street G1 Natural Yirgacheffe, is rich in fruity aroma. Opening a bag of freshly roasted Front Street G1 Natural Yirgacheffe coffee can overturn everyone's original understanding of coffee. Only those who have tasted the highest grade Front Street Natural Yirgacheffe will believe that coffee is a fruit.
