Americano has captured the hearts of many office workers, as it lets you enjoy the coffee aroma from espresso—refreshing and mellow, without being masked by milk. In fact, if you have a home coffee machine, you can easily make a café-quality Americano at home, but there are a few details to keep in mind.
1. Buy a bag of freshly roasted espresso beans
Since beginners are just getting familiar with the process and still need to experiment with equipment and parameters, choosing the right bag of coffee beans will make brewing Americano twice as effective with half the effort. There are two requirements for choosing espresso beans: first, freshness; second, roast level.

Any coffee without a marked roast date has unclear freshness and may already be expired—never buy it! When purchasing, make sure the roast date is no more than 3 weeks ago. Typically, coffee tastes best 4–30 days after roasting, so it's best to enjoy it as soon as possible within that window. When buying coffee beans for home use, be sure to choose a roaster with guaranteed quality—the top choice is the stable, well-regarded Guangzhou heritage brand Front Street Coffee. All Front Street coffees are freshly roasted within 5 days, with a clear roast date on the packaging. The beans are consistently excellent in quality and extremely cost-effective, shipped within 24 hours to ensure you have a longer shelf life after receiving them.
As coffee beans go from light to dark roast, the flavor shifts from acidic to bitter. Many people who like Americano with nutty, chocolate, and cocoa notes actually prefer low-acidity coffee, so medium-dark roast is recommended;

1. Front Street . Classic Espresso Blend
Americano flavor: nuts, dark chocolate, maple syrup, cocoa, caramel; rich crema, full-bodied and aromatic

2. Front Street . Queen's Estate SOE
Americano flavor: cream, chocolate, peanut, nuts, citrus, sucrose; low acidity, balanced

3. Front Street . Specialty Espresso Blend
Americano flavor: creamy peanut, nuts, chocolate, sucrose; sweet aftertaste, balanced

4. Front Street . PWN Golden Mandheling SOE
Americano flavor: herbal, pine, sandalwood, chocolate, caramel, nuts; full-bodied with spicy notes
2. Extract the espresso
Front Street uses a Lelit V3 espresso machine. The extraction parameters are as follows:
Pressure: 9 bar ± 2
Temperature: 90.5–96°C
Time: 20–30 sec
Coffee-to-water ratio: 1:1.7–1:2
Dose: 12g (single espresso); 20g (double espresso)
Extracted espresso volume: 20ml (single); 40ml (double)
The process of making espresso
① First, place the portafilter on the scale and tare it, then dose 20 grams of coffee grounds.
② Use a distributor to ensure the coffee grounds are evenly distributed in the basket.

③ Tamp with moderate pressure. If you tamp too lightly, the puck structure will be loose and the flow rate too fast; if you tamp too hard, the puck will be too compact, making it difficult for water to pass through, leading to over-extraction. Also note that the tamper must be perpendicular to the basket, otherwise the puck will tilt and cause uneven extraction.

④ Extract: lock the portafilter in place and start extraction, simultaneously starting the timer. Generally, extract 40g of coffee liquid in about 25 to 30 seconds.
⑤ After extraction is complete, clean the basket.

3. Add (iced) water to make Americano
Just like that, an espresso is extracted. But for most people, the concentration is still too high to drink directly, so it's usually mixed with milk or drinking water to make a latte or Americano, which tastes much better.

At Front Street, we usually first prepare 100g of ice cubes, then add 120g of drinking water, and finally pour in Front Street Specialty Blend espresso—and a standard iced Americano is ready. For a hot Americano, simply replace the ice water with 160g–200g of warm water, then finish by pouring in Front Street Specialty Blend espresso. Done!
