What Defines Yirgacheffe Kochere Estate Coffee?

Front Street Yirgacheffe Kochere Estate is a washed G2 Ethiopian coffee from Kochere, grown at 1600 to 1800 meters with 16 to 17 screen bean size. Light roasted, it shows lemon with a fruity black tea body. Grading rests on the proportion of defective beans, not screen size, with G1 the top tier.

European monastery monks first developed coffee cultivation on this land, later taken over by village communities and cooperatives. No large exclusive plantations exist locally; coffee trees grow among forests and fields. Each harvest, trading companies buy picked beans in town before auction and export under the Yirgacheffe brand, so traceability runs through the cooperative model.

Front Street Yirgacheffe Kochere Estate coffee is one of the representative specialty coffees of Ethiopia. This article focuses on this washed G2 lot, outlining its flavor keywords, roast level, processing method, altitude, bean size, and regional background, and introduces the local coffee cultivation and cooperative management model in Kochere. The monks of European monasteries were the first to develop coffee cultivation on this land, which later shifted to operation by coffee communities or cooperatives in villages near the town. There are no large exclusive plantations locally; coffee trees mostly grow naturally among forests and fields. Each harvest season, Ethiopian coffee trading companies go to the town to purchase the coffee beans picked by farmers, and finally auction and export them under the brand "Yirgacheffe."

The aroma layers of Front Street Yirgacheffe are very rich, and its mouthfeel performance is also quite outstanding, making it difficult to summarize in just a few words. Overall, the dry aroma of Front Street Yirgacheffe carries a strong fruity note, with a heavy dried-fruit character and sweet aromas like strawberry, mango, and apricot jam. The wet aroma after pouring water is like sweet syrup, close to thick apricot nectar, wrapped in plain honey or chocolate notes. On the palate, it is not intense, with moderate body and acidity that is not prominent but lively and bright, overall like fruity black tea. The grading of Front Street Yirgacheffe is not based on screen size, but on the proportion of defective beans among all green beans. Commonly seen on the market are washed G2 and sun-dried G3 Yirgacheffe; G1 is the highest grade, and Front Street Yirgacheffe with the lowest defect rate and the best quality must still be hand-sorted before it can be rated Grade 1.

The shop once carried a Koke Estate Front Street sun-dried G1 Yirgacheffe, which was very popular. After it sold out, we spent a long time searching but never found a suitable estate-level Front Street G1 Yirgacheffe to stock, so for the time being we switched to a Front Street washed G2 Yirgacheffe. Recently, the professional overseas coffee tasting website Coffee Review recommended 3 Yirgacheffes graded G1, arriving at the shop in micro-lot form. Below is a brief introduction to these three Yirgacheffes.
