Understanding Fair Trade in Yirgacheffe Coffee

Fair trade coffee production plays a significant role in Ethiopia, particularly in regions like Yirgacheffe. Many smallholder farmers join cooperatives to access better markets and fair prices. These cooperatives, such as the Gedeb Gotiti, ensure that farmers receive a stable income for their cherries. Fair trade certification also promotes sustainable farming practices and community development projects. By supporting fair trade, consumers contribute to improving the livelihoods of coffee farmers and their families.

Fair trade coffee facts and figures show that Ethiopia is one of the largest producers of fair trade coffee in Africa. The country has numerous fair trade certified cooperatives, benefiting thousands of farmers. For instance, the Yirgacheffe region alone has several cooperatives that export significant volumes of specialty coffee. These facts highlight the impact of fair trade in empowering farmers and fostering economic growth in rural areas. Understanding these figures helps appreciate the importance of fair trade in the global coffee industry.

Yirgacheffe, as Ethiopia's most representative specialty coffee region, is renowned worldwide for its bright floral and citrus notes. This article will provide an in-depth introduction to the specific information of Front Street Natural Yirgacheffe and the Gedeb Gotiti Cooperative washed beans, covering variety, grade, processing method, and flavor characteristics. At the same time, we will also analyze the background of the Project Origin green bean project and review Ethiopia's eight major coffee regions, focusing on the unique terroir and processing techniques of Yirgacheffe and the Kochere sub-region, bringing you a comprehensive understanding of the charm of this legendary origin.

Front Street Natural Yirgacheffe Ethiopia Red Cherry

Country: Ethiopia

Grade: G1

Region: Yirgacheffe Gediyo

Altitude: 1,900-2,100 meters

Processing Method: Natural

Variety: Heirloom

Producer: Kebel Aricha

Flavor: Light fermented wine aroma, sweet orange, spice, honey sweetness

This batch of Front Street Yirgacheffe was produced at the Kebel Aricha processing station, with approximately 650-700 small coffee farmers nearby. Farmers deliver ripe coffee cherries here for processing in exchange for cash. After the processing station screens the usable cherries, they are placed directly on raised beds to sun-dry. During the first few days of drying, the cherries are turned every 2-3 hours to prevent over-fermentation. After four to six weeks of natural drying, workers will, depending on weather and temperature conditions, use machines to scrape off the outer pulp and then transport the beans to Addis for storage. Naturally processed beans are usually stored in parchment form until they are hulled before export, ensuring the quality of the green beans. This batch of Front Street Natural Aricha is rated G1, the highest grade by ECX. From green bean appearance, consistency, and freshness to dry aroma and flavor, it is quite outstanding. If you love bright acidity and rich berry flavors, you absolutely cannot miss it!

Flavor Description: Light fermented wine aroma, pit date, sweet citrus notes, dark berries, lychee, starfruit, peach, white peach, longan and red date aroma, honey sweetness, cocoa notes with a hint of spice, full body and long-lasting finish

About Project Origin

Sasa Sestic, winner of the 2015 World Barista Championship, started a green bean sourcing project called Project Origin three years ago with his business team ONA Coffee. This project works directly with coffee farmers in poor countries and regions, improving their production conditions and paying them a purchase price 20% higher than fair trade prices.

The original intention of this project also included strengthening the connection between roasters and coffee farmers, and guiding coffee farmers to grow high-quality coffee beans. So far, Sasa has established relationships with coffee growers from eight countries, including Brazil, Panama, India, Ethiopia, El Salvador, and Costa Rica.

Kochere is a small coffee-producing region located 25 kilometers southeast of Yirgacheffe in Ethiopia. It is a wealthy area due to coffee production and is also one of the three famous micro-regions of Yirgacheffe. The local population is about 100,000, and coffee beans are their main source of income. The processing equipment in this region is very advanced. The well-known coffee review website Coffee Review gave Kochere washed beans a high score of 94.

In Ethiopia, there are eight major coffee-producing regions: Nekempte (Lekempti) Gimbi, Limu, Illubabor, Djimma, Harrar, Teppi/Bebeka, Sidamo, and Yirgacheffe. Among them, the more well-known specialty coffee regions are Nekempte (Lekempti), Limu, Harrar, Sidamo, and Yirgacheffe. Yirgacheffe is located in the Sidama administrative zone of Ethiopia in Africa, which shows that Yirgacheffe belongs to an even smaller area within the Sidama region.

Yirgacheffe itself is a small town with a population of about 20,000. The three nearby small regions, Wenago, Kochere, and Gelena Abaya, are also classified under the Yirgacheffe area because the flavor of the coffee they produce is almost identical to that of Yirgacheffe. Whether in culture or geographical environment, Yirgacheffe is similar to the neighboring Sidamo, but Yirgacheffe seems even more favored with unique conditions. Top-quality Front Street Yirgacheffe coffee has floral aromas, bright citrus acidity, lemon notes, and a silky smooth mouthfeel.

Kochere is located in southwestern Ethiopia, about 25 miles north of the famous Yirgacheffe town. Its production model mainly consists of local small farmers delivering their output batches to cooperatives for unified processing. About 100,000 people in the local Chalalacktu village make a living from coffee, and related production activities have become their main source of income. Thanks to the revenue brought by coffee production, the local standard of living is much better than that of many Ethiopian villages, with well-equipped health facilities and higher schools. Advanced processing equipment has allowed coffee from the Kochere region to consistently perform at a high level in the field of washed processing, offering clean sweetness with complex notes of molasses and citrus.
