Arabica Variety Guide: Typica, Bourbon and Catimor in Yunnan

Which arabica variety dominates Yunnan coffee fields?

Catimor is the most widely planted variety in Yunnan. It arrived from Kenya in 1991 and outperforms older types in disease resistance and yield per unit area. Typica and Bourbon, the two classic high-quality varieties, still cover only a small area, mainly around Baoshan, and long served as the region's main plantings before Catimor spread.

Typica traces back to Ethiopia and southeastern Sudan, and Bourbon was derived from it after the French planted it on Bourbon Island, now Réunion, in 1708. Bourbon suits altitudes of 1,200 to 2,000 meters and yields slightly more than Typica. Among arabica coffee types, Catimor is a Timor and Caturra hybrid rather than a pure arabica line.

Yunnan is the core coffee-producing region in China, and its variety structure has always been a topic of interest among coffee enthusiasts. How many types of coffee are there in Yunnan?

In the cultivation landscape of Yunnan coffee, Typica and Bourbon are two high-quality varieties with a long history and have long been the main planting targets. In 1991, the Catimor series was introduced to Yunnan from Kenya, and this variety performed more prominently in disease resistance and yield per unit area. At present, Catimor is the most widely planted variety in Yunnan, while a small amount of Typica and Bourbon cultivation is still retained in the Baoshan area.

Typica

Typica is the most representative classic Arabica variety. For globally renowned coffees such as Blue Mountain and Mocha, the beans used almost all belong to the Arabica system. The origin of Typica can be traced back to Ethiopia and southeastern Sudan, and it is also one of the most widely planted coffee varieties in the Western Hemisphere.

Bourbon

Bourbon was derived from Typica and gradually spread after the French planted it on Bourbon Island (now Réunion Island) in 1708. Bourbon also has a pleasant aroma and rich layered flavors, and is slightly superior to Typica in yield and growth vigor. It is suitable for cultivation at altitudes of 1,200 to 2,000 meters. Among the varieties of Arabica, Bourbon ranks second only to Typica.

Catimor

Catimor belongs to Arabica coffee and is a high-generation Catimor variety. It is not of pure Arabica lineage, but is a hybrid of the Timor variety (belonging to Robusta) and Caturra (a variant of Bourbon), so Catimor contains about 25% Robusta lineage.
