As more and more players enter the field, almost every common coffee on the market now has an iced version, the methods have long become diverse, and the various parameters are dazzling. But in fact, all changes ultimately return to the same principle. As long as we understand the reasoning behind it, there is no difficulty when it comes to adding ice.
1. Rapid Cooling
Looking at coffee shop menus, it is not hard to find that, apart from cold brew and ice drip, the vast majority of iced coffees are extracted by bringing hot water into contact with coffee grounds, so freshly made coffee is always the most aromatic, but also tongue-scalding. At this point, if you want to turn it into a cold drink, adding ice directly is undoubtedly the fastest and easiest cooling method.

But everyone knows one thing: ice lowers temperature by absorbing heat and melting, so to avoid the coffee not yet getting cold while the ice has all melted into a puddle of water, we must leave a certain "space" in the concentration for the ice to work. In other words, before cooling, the coffee must be strong and flavorful enough to withstand the dilution from the ice.

Square ice is mostly hollow, with small particles, and melts relatively quickly; crescent ice is solid, with higher hardness, and melts more slowly in water.
The ice molds we use at home are usually mainly spherical and square. Because they use static freezing, they are all solid ice. In the same shape, the larger the volume, the slower the melting speed, though the corresponding freezing time is also longer.
