According to data from Xinhua News Agency and the Ethiopian Coffee and Tea Authority (ECTA), China has surpassed the United States to become the world's third-largest importer of Ethiopian coffee.

According to reports, the Ethiopian Coffee and Tea Authority (ECTA) exported 47,836 tons of coffee to China in the previous Ethiopian fiscal year, worth 347 million US dollars, up from 34,284 tons in the previous fiscal year.

Data shows that Ethiopia's annual coffee production has grown from 500,000 tons five years ago to 1.5 million tons this year, and the country's coffee yield per hectare has soared from 600 kilograms to 1,000 kilograms.

"China remains one of the emerging markets for Ethiopian coffee, but we are seeing an increase in coffee exports to China. We hope that within the next two years China can become the largest buyer of Ethiopian coffee," Shafi Umer, vice chairman of the Ethiopian Coffee Traders Association, told Xinhua News Agency.

"We are working hard to tap into the huge opportunities for Ethiopian coffee in the Chinese market through vigorous promotion and exports of organic coffee, in order to meet the growing demand of Chinese consumers, especially young people."

According to the Ethiopian Coffee and Tea Authority (ECTA), Saudi Arabia and Germany are the two largest importers of Ethiopian coffee.

China's imports of Ethiopian coffee increased after China eliminated the 100% import tariff on all Ethiopian products in May 2026.
