Heytea's Tea Maker Job Posting Sparks Degree Requirement Discussion
A recent job fair in Guangzhou drew attention when Heytea listed a bachelor's degree requirement for its tea maker role. The education column originally read associate degree but was later changed with a sticker. This prompted many online comments asking whether making milk tea truly needs a university degree. The store later responded that promotions are not based solely on academic qualifications.
The incident highlights a broader debate about education and job expectations in the current market. While the tea maker position involves preparing ingredients, making beverages, cashiering, and coordinating with the store manager, critics say the work still mainly involves making drinks behind the counter. After the discussion spread, the education requirement was changed back to no restriction.
Recently, Heytea publicly recruited tea makers at a job fair in Guangzhou, and the education requirement column conspicuously stated "bachelor's degree," sparking widespread discussion on social platforms. An applicant revealed that the requirement was initially "associate degree," but was later changed to "bachelor's degree" by someone with a sticker. Many netizens questioned: Does shaking milk tea require a bachelor's degree? In response, Heytea stores said that the tea maker position values personal ability more, education is not a hard threshold, and promotions are not based on education. After the incident gained traction, the education requirement on the recruitment notice was changed back to "no restriction." This recruitment controversy reflects the sensitive topic of the match between education and positions in the current job market, and also makes people rethink: where exactly is the career threshold behind a cup of milk tea?

Recently, a post on a social platform about Heytea's recruitment information triggered a large amount of discussion.
At a job fair held in Guangzhou, Heytea publicly recruited 1 financial specialist and 6 tea makers. The tea maker position's work content covers the preparation of store product ingredients, beverage making, cashiering, and daily affairs, and also requires coordinating with the store manager to complete various tasks. The salary range is 5,000 to 7,500 yuan per month, and the education requirement stated was a bachelor's degree.
Interestingly, according to students who attended the job fair, the education threshold for tea makers on the recruitment notice was initially marked as associate degree, but later, for some unknown reason, someone pasted a note printed with the words "bachelor's degree" over it. Faced with this requirement, the poster felt quite surprised and lamented, "After ten years of hard study, I'm going to Heytea to shake milk tea?" At the same time, they were also confused about whether this job really needed an education restriction.
There were many netizens who had similar doubts to the poster. After analyzing the content of the notice, they pointed out that "tea maker," in addition to basic store operations, also requires understanding business operations and business itself, and having strong logical thinking, data processing, and cost control abilities. But in the end, these job descriptions cannot change the fact that the work is essentially making milk tea behind the counter, which in public perception belongs to "physical labor" with a relatively low entry threshold.
Many people frankly said that "anyone with hands can shake milk tea," believing that education is not very helpful for the daily operations of milk tea shop employees, and felt that Heytea's bachelor's degree requirement for this position was "a bit ridiculous." There were also views that by setting such conditions, the recruiter is being unfair to young people who are capable of doing the job but do not have a bachelor's degree, while also adding pressure and anxiety to current job seekers.
Just as the public was heatedly discussing Heytea's recruitment notice online, students who had been to the scene revealed that Heytea staff may have noticed the continued rise in the popularity of the related post, and that afternoon changed the education requirement for tea makers to "no restriction."
After noticing this matter, a reporter from Jiupai News contacted the Guangzhou Tianhuan Plaza LAB store mentioned in the recruitment information on March 17 to try to understand the specific situation.
Staff at the Guangzhou Tianhuan Plaza LAB store replied that the store was indeed recruiting tea makers, but the tea maker position at the job fair was recruited directly by Heytea headquarters, and they did not have the details.
The staff member further explained that the responsibilities of the store's tea makers include making beverages, cashiering, and outdoor service, and are divided into 5 to 6细分 directions, mainly depending on which type of business a person is good at. Even without a bachelor's degree, one can still apply and join through the normal process. "Even if highly educated talent comes in, there is no particular advantage; promotions are all based on personal ability."

On the same day, Heytea's official customer service told the reporter that if interested in applying, one can communicate directly with the store. If one wants to learn more details about the recruitment, one can submit a resume online through Heytea's official recruitment website. Currently, there is no recruiter's phone number available for direct contact.
On a third-party recruitment platform, the reporter tried to ask multiple Heytea HR staff about the education requirement for tea makers, but as of press time, none had replied.
