Is coffee with melatonin oral liquid a real product?

On November 10, melatonin announced on Xiaohongshu a specialty coffee containing melatonin oral liquid, sold in limited quantities during Double Eleven at a pop-up store. The company said the added ingredient is the oral liquid, chosen for its bowel-lubricating effect rather than the sleep-aid capsules, with each cup's dose calibrated to avoid functional conflict.

The launch follows an earlier Shanghai melatonin coffee pop-up that sold ordinary lattes with branding but no melatonin inside, which left customers asking why the ingredient was missing. The new item answers that question, though details on taste, price and whether it moves beyond the pop-up store have not been fully stated.

Melatonin has once again made its presence felt in the coffee world. This time, it's not just a simple co-branded paper cup — Melatonin oral liquid has actually been added to the coffee. On November 10, Melatonin officially announced on Xiaohongshu the launch of a specialty coffee containing Melatonin ingredients, which would be sold in limited quantities at a pop-up store on Double Eleven. As soon as the news broke, netizens were both curious and confused: Melatonin, which is known for aiding sleep, and coffee, which is known for waking you up — what kind of combination is that? The official response stated that what was added was Melatonin oral liquid, which has a bowel-lubricating and laxative function, rather than the sleep-aid capsules, and that the amount used per cup had been scientifically calibrated and would not create any functional conflict. So, how does this coffee taste? And what has Melatonin's journey in the coffee sector been like? Let's take a look.

"No gifts this holiday season, only Melatonin as a gift" — most people are surely familiar with this advertising slogan. Not long ago, we reported on Melatonin opening its first coffee pop-up store in Shanghai. Do you still remember?

According to media reports at the time, consumers could get coffee paper cups printed with the words "Melatonin Café," but the pop-up store only sold ordinary lattes without any Melatonin ingredients, and the products themselves hardly featured any co-branded design elements. From a product standpoint, the coffee sold at the Melatonin café was no different from other products on the market in terms of price and taste. Many netizens were therefore puzzled: why not just add some Melatonin to it?

In other words, the previously launched Melatonin coffee did not actually contain Melatonin ingredients. The coffee product that truly contains Melatonin ingredients only officially launched as a new item in the past couple of days. On November 10, Melatonin posted on Xiaohongshu, officially announcing the launch of a coffee with added Melatonin, with the tagline "every matter gets a response, every task gets followed through."

It is reported that on Double Eleven, the specialty coffee containing Melatonin officially went on sale, currently available only at the pop-up store. Officials also stated that for the first three days after launch, 50 cups would be given away free each day.

A netizen who tried it described it this way: "The slightly sweet flavor and the rich dark chocolate taste of the dark-roasted beans suit Shanghai's sharp temperature drop perfectly — it feels warm."

Those familiar with Melatonin may know that it markets itself primarily on "improving sleep," while coffee has precisely the opposite effect. This inevitably made netizens worry: do coffee, which is known for its energizing function, and Melatonin, which is known for its sleep-aid effect, have conflicting functions? Some netizens even wondered: could it be that melatonin is being added to the coffee?

Does Brain Platinum coffee really contain oral liquid? What is going on with this new product?

The official answer was no, and they stated that each cup of this coffee product contains an appropriate amount of oral liquid.

It is reported that the Melatonin product with sleep-improving effects is the capsule, while what was added to this coffee is Melatonin oral liquid, which has a bowel-lubricating and laxative function. Its main ingredients are oligosaccharides, hawthorn, and poria, which are ordinary food ingredients.

Melatonin also stated that the Melatonin oral liquid added to each cup of this newly launched coffee has been scientifically calibrated and falls within the safe consumption range, and will help somewhat with bowel movement, "without giving users a confusing sense of being both energized and sleep-aided."

The combination of Melatonin + coffee may seem chaotic and contradictory, but it actually isn't. As early as the end of last year, Melatonin began to "dip its toes" into the coffee category, opening its first Melatonin café in Songjiang District, Shanghai, but it was mainly open to internal group employees and not sold to the public. At the end of July this year, Melatonin again collaborated with a local Shanghai coffee shop on a custom co-branded coffee, which also appeared at an international exhibition. This shows that Melatonin's attempts at collaborating with the coffee category were not a sudden whim, but something long planned. A Melatonin official representative once said: "We haven't fully figured out the Melatonin coffee thing yet, but brand rejuvenation is something we absolutely must do." On this co-branded coffee track, how far can Melatonin go, and how far can these series of activities push the brand? Let's wait and see!
