What the Starbucks Reinvention Plan Means for Coffee Machines and Stores

On September 13, Starbucks interim CEO Howard presented the company's reinvention plan at an investor briefing. The measures cover partner benefits, reimagining the third place, beverage production innovation, shorter production times and expanded digital services, with a goal of turning the business around by 2024. Starbucks China released its 2025 strategic vision the next day.

Howard said partners are the core of the plan and the foundation of the company, so pay and benefits will rise along with investment in training and store equipment. New CEO Laxman Narasimhan will work alongside him. For customers, the changes may show up in store layouts, coffee machines and faster drink production.

On September 13 local time, Starbucks interim CEO Howard officially announced the company's reinvention plan at an investor briefing. He noted that the core of this plan lies in reinventing Starbucks, and that the specific implementation path is what needs to be clarified, rather than getting caught up in what exactly the reinvention itself should accomplish.

Howard pointed out that increasing investment in store operations and employee compensation can drive sales and profit growth, and is expected to get the company back on track by 2024.

Accordingly, the key strategies of the reinvention encompass multiple dimensions: optimizing partner benefits, reimagining the third place, driving beverage production innovation, reducing production time, and expanding convenient digital services.

- Improving partner benefits and strengthening management training

Howard emphasized that Starbucks partners are both the core of the reinvention plan and the foundation of the entire company. Therefore, the company will create more value for partners through compensation and benefits.

At the same time, Starbucks will increase investment in recruitment, onboarding training, and store equipment to improve the customer experience. Measures to be implemented in fiscal year 2023 include:

Adjusting the working hours required of partners and leveraging other opportunities to raise overall compensation levels; providing more generous sick leave pay, a new savings plan, student loan management support, and mental health care.

Survey data shows that stores with management staff who have been in their roles for three years or more can see a 13% increase in weekly sales and customer satisfaction.

To this end, Starbucks will arrange new leadership training for store managers, redesign scheduling methods and decision-making processes to retain more experienced managers, and enable them to focus on core responsibilities, thereby driving improvements in store partner morale and overall performance.

- Reimagining the third place

The purpose of reimagining the third place is to create a better and more convenient consumption experience for customers. By strengthening retail and digital services, customers can experience the convenience of Starbucks' third place wherever they are.

For a long time, the third place, with its unique Starbucks experience, has provided customers with a relaxed and unrestrained space for communication. However, its limitation lies in the fact that it must rely on physical stores. Due to the impact of the pandemic, more and more consumers have reduced the frequency of visiting stores, making it difficult for the third place to fully play its role.

So Starbucks decided to double down on multiple store formats: in addition to large stores that can provide space, it will also open small delivery-only stores where customers can pick up in-store or choose delivery, as well as drive-thru stores. By strengthening network coverage and diversifying store formats, Starbucks can better meet the needs of different customer groups.

- Upgrading beverage production systems and equipment

To improve the experience for customers and baristas, Starbucks has developed a new beverage production system and designed a new workflow for the cold beverage bar, which can both enhance baristas' convenience in making beverages and shorten customer wait times.

To this end, Starbucks is developing new coffee machines and streamlining beverage production processes to reduce the time and steps required for making cold drinks, thereby improving efficiency and ultimately freeing up time for partners to build connections with customers.

Cold Brew coffee has been widely favored by consumers since its launch, but each batch requires steeping for more than ten hours, plus cumbersome procedures, making efficiency less than ideal.

Starbucks announces comprehensive reinvention strategy: boosting employee benefits, upgrading stores and equipment, aiming for a turnaround in 2024

Therefore, Starbucks is developing a technology that uses the Cold Pressed Cold Brew system to extract cold brew coffee concentrate. This new technology can complete cold brew extraction in seconds using low pressure, as convenient as pulling espresso shots.

For drip coffee, Starbucks has also introduced a new machine. Previous drip coffee machines required partners to grind coffee beans in advance, and the production steps were complicated. The new machine is similar to an espresso machine but without the pressurized extraction function, and coffee beans have a dedicated hopper for storage.

Just press a button, and the coffee machine will automatically complete grinding and brewing within 30 seconds, which not only reduces the problem of pre-ground coffee losing aroma and flavor over time, but also ensures the freshness and high quality of freshly brewed coffee.

- Simplifying beverage and food heating steps

Starbucks Chief Operating Officer John Culver stated: The production of cold drinks (Frappuccinos) is becoming increasingly complex and time-consuming, and combined with surging sales, has created bottlenecks in Starbucks stores. After research and testing, it was found that the new beverage production system can reduce Frappuccino production time by nearly one-third and simplify the steps.

For food heating, new ovens will also be introduced. Some stores with high food heating volumes or drive-thru stores can apply for ovens capable of batch heating, or be equipped with heated food display cases, thereby reducing wait times for customers who need quick pickup.

- Expanding convenient digital services

The reinvention plan also encompasses technology that makes the Starbucks customer experience more personalized and effortless, while freeing up baristas to focus on creating more connections.

Specifically, this includes: establishing dedicated mobile order pickup lanes; creating a more personalized drive-thru experience that can identify Starbucks Rewards customers and make recommendations based on order history; improving timing algorithms to provide more accurate wait times for mobile orders; and more convenient payment options, so customers don't need to pull out a credit card or even open the Starbucks app.

In addition, the Starbucks reinvention plan also proposes accelerating its leadership position in international markets, and predicts that two-thirds of global retail growth over the next three years will come from international operations, with the Chinese market being particularly prominent.

Therefore, Starbucks China released its 2025 China strategic vision on September 14, outlining a plan for development in the Chinese market based on the reinvention plan.

Although the driving force behind this reinvention plan is Howard, its subsequent execution still requires the cooperation of new CEO Laxman Narasimhan.

Over the next six months, Howard will visit the United States and various locations around the world with Laxman. During this period, he will continue to lead Starbucks at the board level, set the tone for the company's development, and make every effort to ensure Laxman's smooth transition into the role.

Regarding Laxman's capabilities, Howard expressed his trust in Laxman by calling him "the perfect person to lead a perfect company at a perfect time."

When discussing how to create value for Starbucks, Laxman stated: We must meet or even exceed employee expectations in order to exceed consumer expectations, and thereby deliver better products and innovation. And provide differentiated experiences in both the physical and digital worlds, while having a positive impact on communities.

What kind of report card Starbucks will deliver in the future, let's watch together~
