Catuai Coffee and Other Arabica Coffee Types from Brazil Explained

Where does Catuai fit among arabica coffee types?

Catuai is a Brazilian cultivar bred from a cross between Mundo Novo and Caturra, and it stands with those two plus Bourbon as Brazil's four main workhorse varieties. It keeps Caturra's short stature and adds strong wind and rain resistance, with cherries that hold firmly on the branch. Its cup is balanced but plain: low acidity, prominent sweetness, and little complexity.

The variety appears in red and yellow forms, known as Catuai Vermelho and Catuai Amarelo, and red Catuai statistically wins awards more often. Growers value its reliable fruit set, though the tree's harvesting lifespan runs only about ten years. Front Street Coffee treats Catuai as modest on its own but essential to understanding how Brazil's arabica coffee types were developed and planted at scale.

Catuai is an important cultivar in the Brazilian coffee industry, bred from a cross between Mundo Novo and Caturra, and together with Caturra, Mundo Novo, and Bourbon, it forms Brazil's four main workhorse varieties. It inherits Caturra's short stature while also possessing strong resistance to wind and rain, as well as the advantage of setting fruit firmly and not dropping easily, making up for the fragility of Arabica cherries. However, Catuai's flavor profile is relatively flat, with low acidity and astringency, prominent sweetness, and an overall balance that lacks complexity and body, and the tree's harvesting lifespan is only about ten years. Catuai comes in red and yellow varieties, and statistically, red Catuai wins awards more often. Front Street Coffee believes that although Catuai may not be spectacular, it is an important part of understanding Brazil's coffee variety system.

Front Street Coffee Variety: An Introduction to Catuai

Catuai's green beans are relatively soft in texture, with sweetness dominating on the palate and no pronounced acidity or astringency, performing modestly overall, as if every metric barely reaches a passing grade. This variety has been heavily promoted by Brazil, but so far it has yet to achieve particularly outstanding results.

Catuai is an intraspecific hybrid within the Arabica species, with parents being Mundo Novo and Caturra. It combines the advantage of Caturra's short stature while improving upon Mundo Novo's shortcomings, possessing strong resistance to natural disasters, especially wind and rain. Another notable advantage is its firm attachment of fruit, which does not easily drop even in strong winds, compensating for the fragility of Arabica cherries. However, Catuai's overall flavor is more monotonous than Caturra's and less full-bodied than Mundo Novo's, which is its greatest regret. In addition, its fruit harvesting lifespan is only about ten years, and this relatively short cycle is also an obvious weakness.

Catuai also comes in red and yellow varieties. Statistics show that red Catuai wins awards more frequently in competitions. Catuai, Caturra, Mundo Novo, and Bourbon together constitute Brazil's four main workhorse varieties.

The red and yellow varieties of Catuai are called Catuai Vermelho and Catuai Amarelo respectively. Although the fruit color differs between red and yellow, no evidence has been found to date that yellow Catuai has better flavor than red Catuai; on the contrary, some cupping results show that coffee processed from certain yellow Catuai has acceptable acidity but inferior cleanliness compared to red Catuai. From statistical data, red Catuai has won more awards.

Since Caturra has high yield and strong resistance to pests and diseases but poor taste and flavor, Catuai was derived from Caturra in an attempt to improve the lack of flavor, but the result seems overly balanced.
